A yurt could be the perfect winter remedy "I'm an urbanite.
Get me out of here!" If that's your reaction when you hear the word camping, there is hope you might spend a night in one of Ontario's parks and it comes in the form of a yurt. Inspired by the dwellings of nomadic Mongolians, these circular structures are designed to provide kate spade cyber sale some of the home comforts missing from tent camping, making it perfect for wilderness newbies and cold weather campers. For starters, these eight sided domed structures sit high off the ground on a wooden deck floor and have screened "windows" that keep bugs out. Other perks include electricity to power a fluorescent light, an electrical outlet and even a heater for those chilly nights up north. Each yurt also has a table with chairs where meals can be eaten on rainy days and a shelf for personal items. By now you've realized you can walk upright in a yurt and there's even a door that locks, making it more like a one room cottage rather than a tent. But perhaps the reason for the most rejoicing especially for those who don't relish waking up in a sleeping bag with a spider as their bedmate is the bunk beds. There are two double and two single beds, which can accommodate a family of up to six people. The vinyl covered mattresses, while not super kate spade outlet promotions comfy, are definitely a few steps up from a sleeping bag. "This is an easy way to get into camping," kate spade shoes canada says Rick Stronks, chief naturalist at Algonquin Park. "We've had yurts in the park for 10 or 11 years now. We put a few in initially and the program has been very successful." He says the yurts give visitors a sense of what it's like to be in a campground without having to buy all the gear needed to spend a couple of nights in the wild. No need to buy it, lug it or set it all up. And you don't have to wait for summer to try them out. Seven yurts are equipped for year round use. Stronks says the yurts are booked solid in the shoulder seasons by people wanting to experience Algonquin in a different light. To accommodate year round campers, the facilities at the comfort stations near the yurts have been winterized, allowing visitors the luxury of a hot shower even on the coldest of mornings. My family and I have camped in tents with sleeping bags, and although it can be fun, it loses its charm after two straight days of rain or when the weather turns cold. With a yurt, bad weather is no longer a concern because you are protected from the elements. Suddenly camping is no longer a risky venture where inclement conditions can ruin a vacation. Algonquin Park currently has eight yurts, seven in Mew Lake Campground and one in Achray Campground, but that one doesn't have electricity. All have a picnic table and fire pit, which is of course essential for roasting s'mores underneath the stars. Yurts at Algonquin Park run $91.
50 (includes HST) a night with a two night minimum during peak season (June to August) and a three night minimum during peak season long weekends. From May to Canadian Thanksgiving, the Mew Lake yurts come equipped with an outdoor barbeque, full propane tank and even dishes, pots and cutlery are available for your stay. The kate spade saturday bag yurts do have two drawbacks though: Pets are not allowed on the sites and the yurts are not wheelchair accessible, although the comfort station in the area is.
